The University of Malawi (UNIMA) students wing of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has thrown its weight behind Sameer Suleman as its preferred candidate for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly.
In a statement issued and signed on Friday by the wing’s president, Fredrick Quiver Kalulu, Suleman is described as a patriotic Malawian whose leadership qualities and commitment to national service make him the right person to lead Parliament.
“Honourable Suleman’s commitment to serve the people of Malawi is remarkable and unquestionable. In the previous Parliament, he stood side by side with Malawians, safeguarding their interests and promoting their will at every stage,” reads part of the statement.
The statement further hailed Suleman for being a fearless voice for ordinary citizens and for demonstrating a spirit of patriotism and integrity in his work.
“He deserves the position of Speaker of Parliament because he is a patriotic Malawian who genuinely loves his country and its people. His strong leadership qualities, fairness, and deep understanding of national issues make him the best candidate to guide the National Assembly in this new chapter of our democracy,” the statement adds.
The wing also took time to applaud DPP leader and incumbent state president, Arthur Peter Mutharika for nominating Suleman to contest for the Speaker’s seat.
“This nomination demonstrates the President’s wisdom and commitment to ensuring that Parliament is led by someone capable, trustworthy, and ready to put Malawi first,” it said.
According to the statement, the student group believes Suleman’s leadership will enhance the effectiveness of Parliament and contribute to unity and development across the country.
“As the DPP Wing at the University of Malawi, we stand firmly behind Honourable Sameer Suleman and believe that his leadership as Speaker will strengthen Parliament’s role in promoting development, unity, and the well-being of all Malawians,” it concludes.
Suleman, who served as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture in the previous August House is among the names being mentioned ahead of the election scheduled for October 28 at the Parliament Building.
