Ngumuya unveils “Mfumu ya Mafumu,” celebrating four decades of gospel music
Malawi’s gospel icon, Allan Ngumuya, is set to release his 15th studio album, Mfumu ya Mafumu, a milestone marking over 40 years in the music industry.
Contrary to rumors of a hiatus, Ngumuya has been continuously producing and releasing music since 2014, even during his tenure in public office.
Following his parliamentary victory in 2014, he released Oosankhidwa Ake in 2015, signaling that his musical journey remained uninterrupted.
Between 2018 and 2019, Ngumuya released The Best of Me, a two-album compilation celebrating his earlier works.
In 2020, they released two additional pairs of albums, Nyimbo Zotonthoza and Nyimbo za Chilimbikitso, followed by Adzakhala Adzakhala in 2022.
Ngumuya stresses that this is not a “comeback,” but a continuation of the musical path he started in 1985, which has spanned four decades of inspiration and ministry.
The brief quiet period in his career coincided with political engagement, leading some fans to mistakenly think he had stopped making music.
Producing a quality album, Ngumuya explains, is a complex process that can take two to three years to ensure mature, creative, and meaningful content.
While Mfumu ya Mafumu is his 15th original album, counting compilations and “best of” collections brings his total output to around 25 releases over 40 years.
This album revisits older tracks while introducing new songs, all re-recorded with modern technology to achieve contemporary sound quality and longevity.
The majority of the album was produced in South Africa by Papy Kazati Nsenga, while four tracks were recorded in Jamaica, reflecting Ngumuya’s international production reach.
Ngumuya currently has two completed albums, and he is working with his marketing team to determine whether to release them individually or together.
His personal journey includes 16 years in the United States, where he studied at Ivy Tech College, Davenport University, and Purdue University, earning a Master’s Degree in Communication in 2009.
Returning to Malawi in 2014, he successfully contested a parliamentary seat and served until 2019, before relocating back to the United States in 2022 as a permanent resident.
Ngumuya rose to prominence between the mid-1980s and 1990s with iconic gospel tracks such as Yehovah, Kodi Yesu Asamala, Asamalira Mpheta, Tikakumana Patsidya, Yesu Akubwera, and Misonzi.
He clarifies that he has never been a pastor, choosing to minister through his music and connect directly with listeners and families.
One enduring hallmark of his albums is the inclusion of a wedding song, a feature that has endeared him to countless Malawian households.
Mfumu ya Mafumu also includes collaborations with notable artists such as the late Soldier Lucius Banda, Chifundo Chiwaya, Nkosi, Gift Nkhwangwa, and Gift Bamusi, blending generations of gospel talent.
The album’s theme centers on the Kingdom of God, offering hope amidst spiritual, social, emotional, economic, mental, and political challenges.
Each album contains 12 tracks spanning diverse styles, including Allan Beats, reggae, country, mbaqanga, house, and a fusion track influenced by amapiano.
Ngumuya acknowledges the difficulties of producing music across continents, coordinating with artists in Malawi, South Africa, and Jamaica, while managing his own recording sessions abroad.
He credits discipline, dedication, and divine guidance for sustaining a career that has lasted four decades.
The new music will be available on over 50 digital platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok, and Facebook, ensuring fans worldwide can access it.
Ngumuya plans to return to Malawi next year for live performances, promising energetic shows reminiscent of his earlier stage presence.
He concludes with a heartfelt appeal to fans, asking them to embrace his music as a message of hope and faith, leaving political matters aside.
He reminds listeners that resilience is essential in life: “When we fall, we rise again — Tikankhebe, Tidziyendabe.”
