In a quest to enhance the integrity of Malawi’s borders, Immigration officers at Songwe Border Post have arrested a Nigerian national for illegally entering the country.
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Olushola Bello Rasheed, was intercepted on Sunday, October 19, 2025, by officers manning the Kating’inda roadblock in Karonga District.
According to Pasqually Zulu, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services’ publicist, Rasheed was found in possession of a valid Nigerian passport that lacked both a visa and an official entry stamp authorizing his stay in Malawi.
“He is currently in custody while investigations are underway to establish the reasons behind his entry into the country,” said Zulu.
Zulu said initial findings suggest that Rasheed may have entered Malawi through an uncharted route, prompting authorities to heighten surveillance across border areas.
Upon completion of investigations, the suspect will be declared a prohibited immigrant under Section 21(1) of the Immigration Act and deported through Kasumulu Border Post in Tanzania.
Zulu reminded all foreign nationals to strictly adhere to the country’s entry requirements.
