A traditional leader in Mzimba has taken a firm stand against land encroachment after ordering a family to vacate school property they had illegally occupied.

Group Village Headman (GVH) Amon Moyo of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mzikubola directed that Chasowa Mwase and his family vacate the premises of Chabere Primary School, where they had reportedly constructed houses within the school’s boundaries.

GVH Moyo said the decision aims to protect land designated for education and to discourage similar acts of illegal settlement.

“This decision is about protecting school land. Mwase and his family built their houses on government property, which is unacceptable. We must ensure that public institutions are respected,” said Moyo.

The family has been given until March 31, 2026, to vacate the area. Mwase has since acknowledged the Chief’s directive and agreed to comply.

“Yes, I have been told to leave, and I will move out before the deadline. The land belongs to the school, and I have accepted the decision,” Mwase said.

Mzimba Youth Organization (MYO) Executive Director and land rights advocate Moses Nkhana commended the Chief’s action, describing it as a bold move that sets a strong precedent in protecting public resources.

“We applaud GVH Moyo for his decisive leadership. Many schools in Mzimba face encroachment challenges, and this action sends a clear message that such practices will not be tolerated,” said Nkhana.

Land encroachment on school property remains a growing concern in Mzimba, with community leaders and education advocates calling for stronger measures to safeguard public institutions for future generations.

Currently M’mbelwa district council Spoaksperson Joel Phri has applauded GVH Moyo for safeguardind the school premises by delivering a verdict in the interests of leaners.

“What GVH Moyo has done should send a serious warning to communities who encroach on public land. School land should be respected as a no go zone land. So as council we are happy with what GHV moyo did. Let communities stay away from school premises in order for leaners to have tranqil learning environmwnts,” said Phiri.
