For many mothers, the birth of a child marks a joyous new chapter filled with love and hope. But for 26-year-old Tinenenji Foster, who recently gave birth to a baby boy at Balaka District Hospital, that joy was overshadowed by financial worries.
Unable to afford the essentials every new mother needs, Tinenenji’s situation took a hopeful turn when Portland Cement Limited, a subsidiary of Huaxian Cement, stepped in to provide relief, dignity, and support.
As part of this year’s Mother’s Day celebrations, the company donated assorted items—including health packs, hygiene packs, and nutritional packs—worth K8.5 million to assist mothers and their newborns at the district’s referral hospital.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Friday, Portland Cement Chief Executive Officer, Jianguo Liu, emphasized that the company’s success is closely linked to the well-being of the communities surrounding its operations, particularly Ng’onga Village in Balaka, where a new production plant is under construction.
“At Portland Cement, we believe that our growth as a company goes hand in hand with the progress and welfare of the people around us,” Liu said.
He added that the donation was also meant to honour the tireless and remarkable role mothers play in raising children and strengthening families.
Balaka District Hospital Matron, Chifundo Mambulu, described the donation as timely and impactful.
“We are very thankful for what Portland Cement has done at this facility. Some mothers have been struggling without support, and these items will go a long way in improving their stay at the hospital,” she said.
Violet Vilili, Head of Administration and Public Affairs at Portland Cement, noted that the initiative is part of the company’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts in the district.
