Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Joseph Mwanamvekha, is in Washington, D.C., United States of America, attending the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he is engaging global partners on key economic priorities in a bid to resuscitate Malawi’s ailing economy.
The meetings bring together finance ministers, central bank governors, and development partners from around the world to discuss global and regional economic challenges and opportunities.
Throughout the week, Mwanamvekha has been holding discussions with international financial institutions and development partners on Malawi’s immediate priorities, including food security, fertiliser supply, foreign exchange, fuel, and essential medicines.
On Wednesday, the Minister met Mr. Adriano Ubisso, Executive Director of the World Bank, and later held talks with other financial partners focusing on short-term policy measures, ongoing development projects, and funding needs to support the country’s economic recovery.
On Thursday, 16th October, Mwanamvekha chaired the 30th Statutory Meeting of the Constituency, before meeting the World Bank Country Management Unit and the IMF Executive Director to continue discussions on development support for Malawi. He later joined the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, Dr. MacDonald Mafuta Mwale, at the World Bank Group Development Committee Ministerial Lunch and Meeting, where they engaged with development partners on Malawi’s economic agenda.
Today, Friday, 17th October, the Minister and his delegation are expected to attend the IMFC Breakfast and hold a Ministerial Breakfast with the Zambian Minister of Finance. They are also scheduled to meet the African Director at the IMF and the Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Treasury to discuss regional economic cooperation.
The day will conclude with meetings with the Rockefeller Foundation and Lazard International Advisory, focusing on potential investment and development partnerships for Malawi.
Tomorrow, Saturday, 18th October, Mwanamvekha will meet the World Bank Group’s East and Southern Africa Regional Vice President to discuss sustained support for Malawi’s economic programmes and regional development priorities.
According to officials from the Ministry of Finance, the meetings are expected to strengthen Malawi’s engagement with global financial institutions and attract new development support to address the country’s economic challenges.
President Arthur Peter Mutharika recently appointed Mwanamvekha, a seasoned economist, as the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development.
