As Silver Strikers gear up for a pivotal CAF Champions League qualifier against Tanzania’s Young Africans (YANGA) this Saturday at Bingu National Stadium, Minister of State Alfred Gangata has issued a firm warning against match-fixing, urging the team to uphold national pride and integrity on the continental stage.
During a motivational visit to the club’s training session, Minister Gangata stressed that the players are not just representing their club but the entire nation. He cautioned them to remain vigilant against any unethical attempts that might undermine their efforts and tarnish Malawi’s reputation.
“This is about Malawi. You carry the flag,” Gangata told the squad. “Remain focused and avoid anything that could damage the name of the country. Some teams may resort to any means to qualify, do not fall into that trap.”
The minister’s visit comes at a critical juncture for Silver Strikers, who are Malawi’s sole representatives in continental football this season and stand on the brink of making history by advancing to the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time.
Silver Strikers CEO Patrick Chimimba welcomed the government’s support, describing the minister’s visit as a timely morale boost ahead of one of the club’s most significant matches in recent memory. Chimimba praised Gangata’s deep understanding of football administration, particularly his experience with Master Security, and reaffirmed the team’s commitment to physical readiness, mental strength, and ethical conduct.
“This visit means a lot to the team. It shows that the nation is behind us,” Chimimba said. “We are doing everything possible to prepare ourselves to compete fairly and honorably.”
The Reserve Bank of Malawi, Silver Strikers’ primary sponsor, has also pledged unwavering support. Deputy Governor of Operations William Matambo highlighted the importance of Gangata’s message, delivered on behalf of the State President, as a timely motivator for the team.
“The Minister raised very important points. Motivation is key at this stage, and his message couldn’t have come at a better moment,” Matambo said. “We are supporting the team in various discreet ways to ensure they can perform without undue pressure.
