DPP spokesperson reacts to MBC boss Kasakula’s apology to Mutharika

Namalomba

The spokesperson for President Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Shadric Namalomba, says they have taken note of the apology made by Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General George Kasakula, but will wait for Mutharika’s personal response on how he receives it.

Namalomba, who was reacting to Kasakula’s public apology issued earlier today through an MBC video broadcast, said the apology does not come as a surprise since Kasakula is well aware of how deeply he disrespected the former president.

“Mutharika has been writing letters to MBC, MACRA, and MISA Malawi, asking that MBC, especially Kasakula, stop insulting him, but all those pleas were ignored. Mutharika has even complained during public meetings, emphasizing that what Kasakula and MBC were doing was wrong, yet no one paid attention,” said Namalomba.

According to Namalomba, Kasakula’s apology is an open admission of wrongdoing; therefore, it is only fair that the MBC disciplinary committee reviews his conduct and takes appropriate action.

“Furthermore, as a party, we believe it’s too late to save Jerusalem. He did not perform his duties professionally, and therefore, the MBC disciplinary committee should thoroughly examine how he carried out his work,” Namalomba added.

Earlier in the day, Kasakula publicly apologized to Mutharika, his wife Gertrude Mutharika, and the entire DPP family for the remarks he made against them during the September 16 campaign period. In his address, Kasakula expressed deep regret, saying his apology was sincere and aimed at restoring peace and unity.

The development has sparked mixed reactions among political observers, with some viewing it as a positive step toward reconciliation, while others question the timing and motivation behind the apology.

Meanwhile, the DPP has maintained that it will only issue a formal response after Mutharika himself comments on the matter.
