The United Transformation Movement (UTM) President, Dalitso Kabambe, has condemned reports of extensive damage to Kamuzu State House, describing the incident as “gross negligence” and calling for accountability from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and its leader, former President Lazarus Chakwera.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Kabambe said it was “deeply concerning” that a national symbol of authority and security had allegedly been vandalized, stressing that those responsible must face justice.
“We demand a public apology from MCP and President Chakwera. Those responsible for this chaos must be held accountable,” Kabambe said.
He further urged government authorities to immediately question staff responsible for security and maintenance at the State House, arguing that such a breach represented a serious lapse in duty.
Kabambe criticized the silence of the former president and the MCP leadership, describing it as a sign of “arrogance and impunity.”
“Attacking the State House is a serious offense, almost treasonous, and must be treated as such. There is no room for political excuses or persecution after such behaviour,” he added.
The UTM party leader called for an independent valuation of the damage and proposed that those found responsible should personally bear the cost of repairs. He also demanded that culprits be arrested and prosecuted, calling the act “sabotage against Malawi.”
Kabambe urged Malawians to unite behind the current government’s efforts to rebuild the economy and move away from political hostility and violence.
“The election is over; now is the time to focus on reconstruction and progress. Let’s work together for a better Malawi,” he said.
