Botswana Launches Investor Citizenship to Attract Global Capital

Botswana

Gaborone, Botswana – Botswana is introducing new investment and immigration programmes aimed at boosting foreign capital inflows, expanding its economy, and positioning itself as one of Southern Africa’s most investor-friendly destinations.

Starting in 2026, individuals will be able to obtain citizenship through investment, with contributions ranging between US$75,000 and US$90,000. Officials say the initiative is designed to attract international investors and entrepreneurs looking for political stability and long-term economic opportunity.

The new citizenship plan complements Botswana’s existing Investment Visa Programme, which allows foreign investors to live in the country for up to five years to manage or establish businesses. Together, the two schemes are expected to create a clear pathway from temporary residence to full citizenship.

Housing Investment Drive

At the same time, the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement has launched a call for investors to participate in the Bonno National Housing Programme — a large-scale initiative targeting the construction of up to 100,000 affordable homes across 61 constituencies.

Under the programme, housing projects will be developed through rent-to-buy or outright sale models aimed at making homes accessible to ordinary Batswana. The government says the plan will help ease housing shortages and stimulate growth in construction, finance, and infrastructure sectors.

Diversifying Beyond Diamonds

Officials describe the investor entry, citizenship, and housing programmes as part of a wider national strategy to diversify the economy beyond diamonds — Botswana’s dominant export for decades. The government hopes the initiatives will attract both local and foreign investors willing to contribute to long-term national development.

Interested investors have until 17 October 2025 to submit their expressions of interest.

Analysts say Botswana’s latest reforms underscore its reputation as a stable democracy seeking to balance inclusive development with global economic engagement.
