Two men arrested for stealing MDF boat engine, fuel tank- Malawi24

Police in Monkey Bay, Mangochi district, are keeping in custody two men identified as Brasco Mhango, 31, and Tiyamike Chiume, 31, for stealing a boat engine and a fuel tank belonging to the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) Maritime.

Public Relations Officer for Monkey Bay Police Station, Sergeant Alice Sichali, has confirmed the incident.

Sergeant Sichali has told Malawi24 that the incident took place on 3 and 4 October 2025, around 5:00 hrs.

It is reported on the said time and dates that the Maritime officers were on duty around 05:00hrs and discovered that a Digger boat with a fuel tank and a Yamaha 15-horsepower engine had been missing.

On 5 October 2025, military officers received a tip that the two suspects were offering for sale the boat engine and fuel tank at the Mvunguti area. Efforts were made that led to the arrest of suspects.

Suspects were brought to Monkey Bay Police Station, and the scene was visited, revealing that the boat had been swept away by heavy winds which was blowing on that particular day.

It is reported that the suspects found it floating in the waters of Lake Malawi, where they removed the engine and fuel tank.

They will appear before the court soon to answer the charge of Theft by finding.

Brasco Mhango and Tiyamike Chiumia both come from Sumbi Village, Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi district.
