Unofficial results from the General election held on 16 September reveal that President Lazarus Chakwera garnered 5,676 votes from 236,720 valid votes in Zomba district’s nine constituencies.
Chakwera failed to secure a lead in any constituency, whereas DPP’s Peter Mutharika secured 213,241 votes, leading in each constituency, and Former President Joyce Banda secured 4,414 votes in her home district.
Banda and her daughter, Edith Akridge Kachale, who contested for a parliamentary seat in Zomba Malosa, did not fare well in their home soil, obtaining 2,002 and 3,338 votes respectively from Zomba Malosa Constituency.
In contrast, Chakwera received almost 2,500 votes from Zomba City North and South constituencies, while Mutharika garnered over 30 thousand votes in those two constituencies.
