DPP disowns propaganda pages on Facebook

Namalomba

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Shadric Namalomba has denied the party’s involvement in running Facebook pages accused of spreading propaganda and targeting human rights defenders.

His response follows criticism from rights activist Undule Mwakasungula, who condemned a smear campaign linked to the DPP. The posts in question allege a conspiracy by human rights defenders (HRDs) against DPP leader Peter Mutharika.

In a statement, Mwakasungula described the claims as “false and dangerous,” warning they could incite political unrest and put the lives of HRDs at risk.

“Such propaganda is dangerous and can potentially push our country into an unnecessary political crisis,” he said. “Human rights defenders work to promote democracy, justice, and peace. They are not enemies of anyone.”

Mwakasungula also called on political parties to respect the role of the Malawi Electoral Commission and avoid making premature claims of victory ahead of elections.

But Namalomba was unequivocal in distancing the DPP from the online posts.

“To drag our party into this is very unfortunate and unwelcome. Cut a long story short, DPP is not responsible for any propaganda of any sort,” he stated.
