The United Transformation Movement (UTM) has been urged to completely stay away from supporting or endorsing either the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) or the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) if the September 16 elections proceed to a runoff.
Political commentator Wonderful Mkhutche, writing on his Facebook page, advised that the party should not participate in the runoff, but instead thank its supporters for their votes and outline a clear roadmap for the 2030 elections.
“If we go into the second round, I would advise UTM to COMPLETELY stay away from supporting or endorsing any of the two parties,” Mkhutche wrote. “Even if there are allegations of electoral rigging, UTM should stay mute. There shouldn’t be any ounce of desperation, in whatever way.”
He emphasised that maintaining independence now will help the party to position itself as a progressive political entity beyond the limits of the MCP and DPP.
“The price to pay for this identity is to easily let go of this election, and take the difficult job of rebuilding the party in the next five years. If I could meet UTM leaders I would tell them this,” he added.
Observers agree that UTM’s credibility and influence in future elections will depend on its ability to remain principled and focused on long-term strategy rather than immediate political gains.
The advice follows recent pre-election surveys by institutions such as Malawi24, IPOR, and Afrobarometer, which indicate that the DPP is poised to lead, with the MCP and UTM coming in second and third, respectively.
