Malawi’s iconic musician and Tourism and Cultural Ambassador, Tay Grin, has responded to public curiosity over how he has managed to bring international superstars Wizkid and Awilo Longomba to perform in Malawi at a time the country is facing forex shortages.
The award-winning artist, who will headline the Echoes of Greatness concert on Friday, 6 September at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe, said the milestone results from long-term efforts to position Malawi’s culture on the global map.
“It’s a fair question, and I’m glad it has been raised. The forex we’ve accessed is the result of international partnerships I’ve built over time and through my role as Malawi’s Tourism and Cultural Ambassador. These partnerships, together with support from government and other key players, have created the avenues for us to secure the necessary resources,” said Tay Grin.
“That is exactly how we’ve managed to pay both Awilo and Wizkid. It’s not guesswork — it’s the fruit of long-term positioning, relationship building, and the recognition of Malawi’s cultural growth on the global stage. What matters most is that, as a country, we are now hosting global superstars, elevating our industry, and proving that Malawi is ready for the world.”
Tay Grin, who was appointed by the Malawi Tourism Council in February 2025 to champion the country’s creative and cultural footprint globally, credited the enabling environment created through this ambassadorial role for opening new avenues.
“The question many are asking is how I managed to secure forex to bring in Awilo and Wizkid, or whether I’m even paying them. The truth is, what you’re now seeing are the results of my role as Tourism and Cultural Ambassador. My travels to platforms like the BET Awards and other international forums have opened doors and built partnerships that make such milestones possible.
“With the support of the government in my ambassadorial role, we’ve been able to create access and opportunities that are helping us grow Malawi’s creative industry. This is bigger than me — it’s something every Malawian should be proud of.”
The Echoes of Greatness concert will feature live performances by Tay Grin, Awilo Longomba, and Wizkid, in a historic celebration of Nyau Music’s two-decade journey.
