The Walkers Social Club, a network of professionals who meet every Saturday for fitness walks, is set to mark its official launch on 23 August 2025 with a 20-kilometre walk in Thyolo, followed by a donation to the local hospital.
Founded in November 2024 by a group of professionals in Blantyre, the club has since expanded to other districts, drawing over 150 members from across the country. Members meet every Saturday morning for fitness walks, networking, and social bonding.
President of the club, Felix Wisdom Banda, said the launch will mark a new chapter in the group’s growth and visibility.
He explained that the event will start with a walk from Thyolo District Hospital to Makwasa, before a formal launch at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) Sports Complex, where there will be a celebratory brunch with entertainment from the Mighty Mibawa Band.
Banda assured prospective participants that the walk will accommodate different levels of fitness. “On the walk, people should not be scared of the kilometres. Those who would want to do 5 kilometres or 10 kilometres will do so because we will have a recovery vehicle along the way,” he said.
He outlined the club’s objectives as promoting physical and mental health, encouraging networking and business exploration, supporting community development programmes, and creating space for health, business and life skills discussions.
Membership in the club is currently free and open to all ages. Each week, members propose and vote on new walking routes, with Saturday mornings chosen to allow participants to complete the activity before continuing with their daily routines.
“Membership is growing every week, and the group’s brand name is now known both in Malawi and abroad,” Banda added, while appealing for support from organisations and individuals to make walking a lifestyle embraced across the country.
The club’s patron, Professor Frank Taulo, expressed excitement about the forthcoming launch. “We started this group from humble beginnings and I am happy that we are now launching it. If you look at our objectives, we all need to embrace this new healthy lifestyle. I am appealing to all to support and join us, it is a lively group,” he said.
An enthusiastic member, John Nthakomwa, who is also the founder of Mibawa TV, said he is looking forward to the event. “It’s more fun to walk and share stories with other walkers. You are having fun and at the same time you are improving your health, it’s a win-win situation.”
