Tay Grin Unleashes “Combien?” Featuring Awilo Longomba & Eddie Kadi
Malawi’s music heavyweight and cultural icon, Tay Grin, has returned to the international spotlight with a brand-new cross-continental anthem titled “Combien?” featuring Congolese musical legend Awilo Longomba and UK-based African entertainer Eddie Kadi.
Released on Monday, 18 August 2025, the single already creates waves across digital platforms and airwaves in Africa and beyond. A bold blend of Nyau Music, Soukous, and modern Afrobeat, the track is a sonic celebration of ambition, desire, and African unity.
“This collaboration is about legacy, rhythm, and African unity,” said Tay Grin. “Working with Awilo and Eddie brought nostalgia and a fresh edge. The result is global. We’ve created something that cuts across borders while deeply rooted in our identity.”
Combien?, which translates from French to “How Much?”, dives into provocative themes surrounding value, love, sacrifice, and lifestyle. It challenges listeners to reflect on what they are willing to give, show, or sacrifice for love, success, or pleasure.
“It’s a party anthem with heart,” Tay Grin explained. “It’s also about ambition and worth—about owning your narrative, knowing your power, and celebrating who you are, wherever you’re from.”
The fusion of French, English, and Chichewa lyrics reflects the truly Pan-African spirit of the collaboration, embracing the diversity of the continent’s languages and styles. It’s music that dances through cultures—yet remains unmistakably Malawian at its core.
The track features none other than Awilo Longomba, a legendary Congolese performer known for his explosive Soukous hits that have dominated African dance floors for decades. Adding a contemporary twist is Eddie Kadi, a Congolese-British comedian and media personality known for proudly promoting African culture on international stages.
The trio came together in 2024, when Eddie Kadi introduced Tay Grin to Awilo during a UK visit. The connection was instant, and the musical synergy birthed what Grin now calls “a dream collaboration.”
“Awilo’s energy, Eddie’s charisma, and my vision for Nyau Music—it just clicked,” Tay Grin shared. “We blended nostalgia and contemporary flair. The result? Combien.”
The production was handled by none other than Tricky Beatz, one of Malawi’s most celebrated and award-winning producers. Known for shaping the sounds of contemporary African music, Tricky Beatz brings an infectious rhythm that fuses modern bounce with traditional flavour.
“This is Malawi’s sound—refined and exported,” said Tay Grin. “To have Tricky Beatz on this track makes it even more powerful. It proves we don’t have to go abroad to create global hits—we have the talent right here.”
“Combien?” comes at a special moment in Tay Grin’s career. 2025 marks 20 years since he burst onto the scene, introducing Nyau Music to Malawi and beyond. Since then, he has built a legacy that includes collaborations with 2Baba, Orezi, Da L.E.S, Beenie Man, Nameless, and many more.
His biggest hits—Chipapapa, Kanda, Lubwa, Boombastic—continue to dominate playlists, while his contributions as a tourism and culture ambassador continue to place Malawi firmly on the global entertainment map.
The single also sets the stage for his much-anticipated 20th Anniversary Concert, “Echoes of Greatness”, scheduled for 6 September 2025 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.
