Maureen Phiri sets sights on historic win in Mpamba as MEC confirms candidacy
For the first time in Mpamba Constituency’s history, voters may have a chance to elect a female Member of Parliament. Maureen Commandoes Phiri, an independent candidate, has been officially cleared by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to contest in the forthcoming elections an approval that has generated excitement among youth and women in the district.
Phiri’s candidacy is viewed by many as a groundbreaking moment in Nkhata Bay, a district where women have long been underrepresented in politics. If successful, she would break decades of male dominance in Mpamba’s parliamentary seat.
Speaking to Malawi24 shortly after her clearance, Phiri described the development as both humbling and motivating.
“This is not about me; it’s about the people of Mpamba. I am ready to champion education, healthcare, infrastructure, and empowerment initiatives that will uplift every corner of this constituency,” she said.
Phiri has outlined a six-point manifesto focusing on critical areas of development:
Education: Improve school infrastructure, expand teacher numbers, introduce bursaries for vulnerable learners, and promote vocational training for youth.
Health and Social Services, Advocate for more health facilities, improved staffing, access to clean water, and stronger maternal and child health programs.
Infrastructure: Strengthen road networks, promote rural electrification, and push for better internet and mobile coverage.
Youth and Women Empowerment: Establish small business development funds, expand ICT and skills training, and promote sports and cultural activities.
Agriculture & Fisheries: Provide modern farm inputs, support irrigation schemes, improve fishing tools and storage facilities, and promote cooperatives.
Good Governance: Ensure transparency, regular constituency engagement, and strong collaboration with traditional authorities and civil society leaders.
With her name now on the ballot, Phiri is positioning herself as the face of inclusive and transformative leadership. Supporters say her focus on integrity and accountability resonates with voters weary of unfulfilled promises from past administrations.
“I believe Mpamba deserves a leader who listens and delivers. I am prepared to be that leader,” Phiri declared.
Her symbol is a woman carrying a child on her back, reflecting her commitment to family values and community-centred leadership.
As election day draws closer, Phiri’s candidacy is expected to reshape the political conversation in Nkhata Bay, raising hopes that Mpamba Constituency may soon witness a historic shift in its representation.
