The fifth edition of the Malawi Youth Games officially launches today in Blantyre, marking another significant milestone in the country’s efforts to nurture young sporting talent through school-based competitions.

Speaking ahead of the opening, Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA) General Secretary, Crispin Nyasulu, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in organising the games.

“We, as MASSA, have followed the plan laid out by the Malawi National Council of Sports, and we are proud of the direction these games are taking,” Nyasulu said. “Our message to all Malawians is simple, come and enjoy the games. Come and watch the incredible talent from Karonga, Mulanje, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Salima, and Nkhotakota. Whether it’s football, netball, handball, basketball, para-sports, or athletics, there’s something for everyone.”

The Malawi Youth Games were initiated as a response to the decline in school sports nationwide, to revive and identify competition and promising athletes from a young age.

Edgar Mtulumbwa, spokesperson for the Malawi National Council of Sports, emphasised the growth of the games since their inception.

“From season one to season five, we have seen significant growth, from just five disciplines (football, netball, basketball, athletics, and volleyball) to now seven,” Mtulumbwa said. “This aligns with our vision to bridge the gap in youth sports development. Over the years, many talented athletes have been discovered through these games, and some have already represented Malawi on international stages.”

Mtulumbwa also noted that the current season holds promise for identifying athletes who could qualify for the 12th Edition of the Region 5 Youth Games, scheduled to Mozambique next year.

“We invite the people of Blantyre to come out and support these young athletes—not just for entertainment, but to be part of a journey where future stars are born,” he added.

The Malawi Youth Games continue to be a beacon of hope for revitalising grassroots sports, offering young athletes the opportunity to shine while uniting communities through sport.
