Lameck Magawa, a native of Mzimba, has openly criticised Paramount Chief Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V over remarks directed at investors operating in the district.

Magawa’s comments follow the Paramount Chief’s recent suggestion that certain financial institutions that did not support the Umtheto Cultural Festival should also cease doing business in Mzimba.

In a strongly worded statement, Magawa reminded the Chief that Mzimba, like all districts in the country, is governed by the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi. He specifically cited Section 207, which stipulates that all land within Malawi’s borders falls under the jurisdiction of the Republic.

“Therefore, he has no mandate to threaten any investor who operates in Mzimba,” Magawa said.

He added that all investors, whether private or public, operate under established policies and guidelines that govern how they conduct business.

Magawa also condemned the public naming of investors who allegedly refused to support the cultural event, describing the move as unacceptable in a district known for its hospitality and respect.

“The Paramount Chief should know that when requesting something, we expect either a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’—without resorting to threats or public shaming,” he stated.

Magawa further questioned the Chief’s commitment to promoting the Ngoni language.

“It is very unfortunate that the Paramount Chief is trying to promote Ngoni culture in Mzimba while he does not speak Ngoni. Moreover, the Chief should realise that he is not hosting only one culture or tribe. I was expecting to see him speak the Ngoni language and have an interpreter for other groups,” he said.

The Umtheto Cultural Festival, an annual celebration of Ngoni heritage, is one of the most significant cultural events in Mzimba. While community leaders often appeal for support from various institutions, Magawa’s remarks highlight growing tensions over how such requests are made.

As of now, Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V has not publicly responded to Magawa’s criticism.
