The Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM), through its project Fighting Inequalities Through Local and Mining Governance, has called on youths in Karonga District to use social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp to share messages promoting peace during the election period.
EAM Project Coordinator Lusungu Kumwenda Mangochi made the call on Friday during a capacity-building session with youths from Traditional Authorities Kilipura, Wasambo, and Paramount Chief Kyungu in the district.
“Youths are heavily engaged on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok, we want to meet them where they are and encourage them to create content that promotes peace and non-violence. After this session, we expect the participants to engage their peers on these platforms, highlighting the roles young people can play in ensuring peaceful, non-violent elections”, she said.
Karonga District Council Youth Officer Lapken Liwago commended EAM for organising the training, describing it as timely as the country prepares for the September elections.
He urged the youths to take an active role in spreading peace messages through various channels.
One of the participants, McLean Mwale, Secretary for the Karonga Youth Network thanked EAM for the initiative and pledged to actively involve young people in peace-building efforts.
