“I regret being in government” — VP Michael Usi blasts MCP-led administration over corruption

Malawi’s Vice President and leader of the Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu party, Michael Usi, has publicly expressed regret over his role in the current administration, accusing the Malawi Congress Party (MCP)-led government of fueling corruption and greed.

Speaking during a whistle-stop tour at Wakawaka Market on Sunday, Usi—once a close ally of President Lazarus Chakwera—said he has witnessed “so much evil” within government structures since assuming the vice presidency.

Usi particularly pointed to rampant corruption involving both local and foreign investments, where government officials allegedly demand bribes before approving development projects.

“This is not the Malawi we fought for. When an investor wants to bring development, some leaders ask, What is it for me? That is pure evil,” Usi said.

The visibly frustrated Usi revealed that he often questions why he accepted the role, considering the rot he has witnessed firsthand. He warned that unless Malawians vote for development-oriented leaders in the September 16 General Elections, the country’s situation will worsen.

Usi was appointed Vice President following the tragic and controversial plane crash that claimed the life of his predecessor, the late Saulos Klaus Chilima.
