Castel commits to community, supporters engagements

2025 Castel Challenge Cup

Castel Malawi has reaffirmed its dedication to grassroots football and deeper fan involvement with the official launch of the 2025 Castel Challenge Cup, marking a bold shift towards community-centered sports development.

Speaking during the competition’s kickoff in Nsanje, company representatives outlined a strategy that places supporters and local communities at the heart of the tournament’s growth.

The launch event, held at the newly renovated Nsanje Community Centre, featured a ceremonial match where Umodzi FC edged Nsanje Medicals 1-0. But beyond the result, it was the presence of a large, enthusiastic crowd that underlined Castel’s key message, football belongs to the people, and the people must be part of the journey.

Frank Binauli, Head of Product Development and Marketing Strategy at Castel Malawi, stressed that this year’s edition goes beyond just funding the competition.

Castel is set to actively promote supporter participation by helping to establish official fan clubs across all competition levels, from district qualifiers to Super League teams.

Binauli described the fans as the “soul of football,” and emphasized that creating space for them to organize, celebrate, and support their teams would strengthen not just the tournament, but the football culture in Malawi as a whole.

He noted that Castel wants to make sure the tournament continues to serve as a platform for both talent development and community celebration.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM), which co-manages the competition, also highlighted Castel’s increased investment in the cup, now at K440 million, the highest for any knockout competition in the country.

FAM Executive Member Felister Dossi said the record sponsorship will not only raise the level of play but also improve logistical and venue standards across participating districts.

This year’s launch in Nsanje was historic, being the first time the Castel Challenge Cup opened in the Southern Region.

The renovated community centre stood as a powerful symbol of inclusion, with Dossi praising the decision to bring the spotlight to underrepresented areas and reaffirming FAM’s commitment to taking football to all parts of the country.

As with previous editions, the tournament will follow a two-phase format, beginning with district and regional qualifiers before moving to a national knockout stage.

A total of 32 teams, including 16 TNM Super League clubs, will battle for the title, with the final scheduled for December 2025. Defending champions Mighty Wanderers will be looking to hold onto their crown.

With record funding, renewed community focus, and a structure that empowers local teams and supporters alike, the 2025 Castel Challenge Cup aims to be more than just a competition. It aspires to be a nationwide celebration of football’s power to connect, uplift, and inspire across every corner of Malawi.
