Kabambe pledges to revitalise decentralisation policy

United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dalitso Kabambe has reiterated his commitment to breathing life into Malawi’s decentralisation policy, which has been hindered by chronically underfunded district councils.

During his whistle-stop tours in Salima and Nkhotakota, Kabambe emphasised that the neglect and suffering in communities across various sectors, including education, health, agriculture, transport, and water, should not be the norm.

Kabambe highlighted that despite well-structured plans being developed from village to district level, they often stall due to inadequate funding over the past 25 years.

To address this, he proposes allocating 100 billion kwacha annually to each district, enabling local councils to drive meaningful development based on priority needs rather than political interests.

“Fellow Malawians, to reverse this trend and give true meaning to decentralisation, a UTM government will implement a bold transformative policy – 100 billion kwacha every year for every district,” Kabambe stated.

“With 100 billion kwacha annually, local councils will drive real development in education, health, agriculture, water and sanitation, transport, trade, and more, based on priorities, not political interests.” He added.

Kabambe emphasised that this year’s election is about empowering the 80% of Malawians residing in rural districts, allowing them to benefit from decentralisation that delivers tangible results.
