…Revises Manifesto Promise…
Malawi President, Lazarus Chakwera, has sparked controversy by revising his manifesto promise from K500,000 to K50,000 for newborn babies.
Speaking at a whistle-stop event in Mzimba’s Hewe Trading Centre, Chakwera explained that the aim is to reduce poverty for future generations by investing in the children’s futures.
According to Chakwera, each newborn will receive K50,000, which will be invested and accessible when they turn 18, potentially growing to millions.
“Kutsogoloku umphawiwu tithane nawo, nde mwana aliyense tidzimuyikira ku bank akabadwa 50 sauzande kwacha akadzakwana zaka 18 ndalama ija idxakhala itachulukitsidwa chifukwa ndi investment yomsungira adzakhala ali ndi ma millioshortlyure we aim to reduce poverty by putting into account 50 thousand kwacha to a newly born baby, and they will have access to it after 18 years with interests ” Chakwera explained.
He emphasised the need for proactive governance to drive progress and highlighted his efforts to officially gazette Neno, Mwanza, and Likoma as independent districts after years of being pronounced on the podium.
However, Chakwera’s manifesto has faced criticism, with many questioning the realism of his promises given his administration’s performance over the past five years.
