Wanderers’ Somba Banda resigns amid CAF Confederation Cup conflict of interest
As preparations intensify for the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup, Mighty Wanderers Football Club has announced the resignation of Tiya Somba Banda from its Board of Directors, effective July 31, 2025.
In a statement signed by Board Secretary Chancy Gondwe, the club says Somba’s resignation follows the identification of a potential conflict of interest stemming from his dual roles as both a Director of the club and a CAF General Coordinator.
The club emphasised that the decision was made to preserve the integrity and fairness of the competition.
“To ensure the integrity and fairness of the competition, Mr. Tiya Somba Banda needed to step down from his position on the Wanderers Board,” the statement read.
Somba Banda, who also served as Chairman of Football Development, has been recognised for his exceptional service and leadership within the club. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in key football development initiatives as the team sought to reclaim its historic dominance in Malawian football.
“We sincerely thank Mr. Tiya Somba Banda for his dedication, leadership and unwavering commitment during his tenure as Director and Chairman of Football Development,” Gondwe said. “His contributions have been invaluable as we continue our mission to make Mighty Wanderers mighty again.”
The club concluded its statement by wishing Somba Banda continued success in his future endeavours.
Mighty Wanderers, the TNM Super League leaders, are currently gearing up for a challenging CAF Confederation Cup campaign, with supporters hopeful for a strong showing on the continental stage.
