Egyptian authorities say ‘No’ to TikTok twerking

In Egypt, authorities have arrested at least eight TikTok content creators on vague charges of “indecency,” raising concerns, as reported by a local news outlet, that the crackdown mainly targets women.

The advocacy group EIPR says this is the largest crackdown since 2020, when similar actions focused on women for suggestive content.

The government claims that the creators used “obscene language” and violated public morals.

These arrests came after 32 lawyers complained that the videos were harmful to young people, but they did not explain how.

Some media and government supporters praised the arrests, saying they protect society’s values.

However, Egypt’s laws allow officials to interpret morality broadly, making it easier to prosecute people.

EIPR has recorded at least 151 cases related to “violating family values” since 2020.
