The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) under the Karonga Diocese has launched a voter education and observation project aimed at combating voter apathy and promoting peace ahead of Malawi’s 2025 General Elections.

Speaking during a press conference held on Monday in Karonga District, CCJP Desk Officer Obert Mkandawire said elections in Malawi are often characterised by low voter turnout and incidents of violence.

“Through the project ‘Strengthening Democracy Through Voter Education and Observation of the Malawi 2025 General Elections’, we aim to sensitise approximately 4,000 eligible voters on electoral processes and resolve at least 50% of reported electoral-related conflicts,” Mkandawire said.

He added that the project will involve voter education rallies using theatre, loud-hauling, and music across the 13 constituencies in Chitipa, Karonga, and Rumphi Districts. The Karonga Diocese, which oversees CCJP operations in the region, works across all three districts.

In an earlier interview, Karonga District Elections Officer Elias Nyirenda praised the initiative and called on all stakeholders to support civic engagement efforts.

“This is a commendable effort. We all need to work together to raise awareness and encourage citizens to vote,” said Nyirenda.

The initiative is being funded by the Diocese of Münster in Germany.
