Minister of Local Government and MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda has dismissed claims that delays in the M1 Road project are due to political negligence. He stressed that the government prioritises sustainable infrastructure over short-term political wins.
In an exclusive interview, Chimwendo Banda explained that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is confident in its grassroots strength and achievements, not rushing into campaign mode.
“We are not a Facebook party. Our support is built from the ground up,” he said, highlighting their success in mobilising voters during registration.
He expressed certainty that MCP will secure victory in the 2025 general elections without any need for a re-run, thanks to their solid groundwork and popular backing.
Regarding the M1 Road and other infrastructure projects, Chimwendo Banda emphasised their complexity and the need for proper planning. “Projects like the M1, spanning from Karonga to Lilongwe, can’t be rushed. Quality infrastructure requires time,” he explained, pointing to other ongoing roadworks as examples.
He also criticised previous governments for pushing quick, campaign-driven projects that resulted in poor infrastructure quality.
“For example, Muluzi’s Midima road in Thyolo still stands strong, unlike some DPP roads that are already deteriorating after a few years,” he noted.
Beyond infrastructure, Chimwendo Banda highlighted government achievements in health and agriculture, including the construction of over 240 health centres and loans to boost farming productivity and exports, aimed at easing foreign exchange shortages.
To tackle economic challenges, he outlined plans to invest in farming, tourism, mining, and value addition, including launching a state-owned mining company and new sector regulations. “We’re building a foundation for long-term recovery, not quick fixes, for Malawi’s future,” he concluded.
