Many critics have expressed worry that in addition to Peter Mutharika’s advanced age, the choice of the controversial Jane Ansah as the running mate is a missed penalty.
Critics argue that she cannot bring the much anticipated votes to secure APM’s victory.
Others surmise that since the opening of the official campaign period, APM has not taken any effort to start campaigning for his candidature.
However, one question that persistently lingers is that, is it possible to win a presidential race without a vigorous campaign?
The candid answer is that though it is highly unlikely for one to win elections without campaigns, it is also not a possible impossibility.
In the case of Peter Mutharika, he does not need to campaign extensively because he has a strong record of accomplishments and public approval.
APM can rely on his established good track, media coverage, and existing voter base.
It is obvious that the economy was relatively more stable during APM’s reign than under the clueless leadership of Chakwera.
Secondly, APM has shown empathy and leadership as a leader during a national crisis such as cyclone Freddy, looming hunger and the rampant economic downturn.
For instance, distribution of food items to starvation strapped citizens has astronomically raised his popularity across the Malawi populace.
Thirdly , despite negative photo shopped and video edited scenarios of APM, there are still people who voluntarily spread APM’s positive messages, leading to a strong base of support that translates into votes.
Fourthly, APM has been endorsed by various Chiefs, pastors, civil society organisations, Aford President and even Sheikhs to stand for presidential elections.
Lastly, APM has empathised with citizens of Malawi through media appearances, interviews, and public speaking engagements to build his profile without a formal campaign.
In conclusion, as an experienced politician, with evidence of proven track record of stabilizing the Malawi economy, APM does not need extensive vigorous campaigns.
In fact, his heart is bleeding with empathy when he sees the electorate wallowing in abject poverty.
Will APM score a penalty at Njamba Freedom Park where DPP manifesto and its campaign period will be launched on Sunday 3 August 2025?
Only voters are the ultimate decision makers.
