The immediate past Member of Parliament for Chikwawa South Constituency, Illias Karim, says he is confident of securing another five-year term of office when constituents go to the polls on 16th September to elect new office bearers.
He made the remarks on Wednesday after presenting his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Officials at Makande Primary school in Chikwawa district.
After exiting the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) four months ago to attend to his business commitments, Karim was approached by Traditional Leaders and community members who pleaded with him to reconsider his decision and participate in the election. He remains optimistic about his prospects as an independent candidate.
He said contesting on an independent ticket gives him a great advantage to win the constituency.
“I have done numerous development projects in the area, ranging from Health, Education, Water, among others. I need another term to further transform the area with such development projects,” he said.
He further highlighted some of the achieved development projects in the area, including the construction of Nsangwe Health Centre, Konzere Community Day Secondary School (CDSS), Nkhwangwa CDSS, School blocks in many schools, and drilling of boreholes across the area, among others.
This is the third time that Karim is standing after he was elected twice since 2014, and he is expected to compete against Lackson Ngalu of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lloyd Mashilini of the MCP, and Shilla Malola of the United Transformation Movement (UTM).
