Mumba tells MCP not to field any candidate in Mzimba Central

Trade Minister Vitumbiko Mumba has asked the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to completely pull out of the Mzimba Central parliamentary race by not fielding any candidate in the September 16 general elections.

Through his lawyer, Khumbo Soko, Mumba has written to the party’s Director of Legal Affairs, proposing that all MCP aspirants in the constituency should contest as independents, and that the party should officially stay out of the race. The letter sets a firm deadline of 3pm today for the party to respond.

“Kindly confirm that we can end this long-standing saga in the manner proposed above by 15:00 today, Tuesday, July 29, 2025,” reads part of the letter.

The push comes amid a legal cloud over the primaries held in May at Katunguwiru Primary School, a last-minute venue change from the originally planned Chamaliwa Primary School, after violence disrupted early preparations.

Later, MCP officials had declared Presidential Advisor Adamson Kuseri Mkandawire the winner of the primaries, but Mumba disputed the results, claiming the elections never followed party rules.

Meanwhile, MCP is yet to respond to Mumba’s request.
