Smart Swira has become the fourth presidential hopeful to declare that his candidacy comes with divine endorsement, telling reporters on Tuesday that “God has sent me to rescue Malawians.” Swira, who is contesting as an independent candidate, made his declaration at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) nomination centre at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC).
“Let me thank God for this opportunity,” Swira began, flanked by his equally devout running mate. “Malawians are crying. But we are here to bring sanity, end corruption, and ensure money goes where it’s supposed to go.”
He emphasised his spiritual mission with preacher-like conviction, warning that his campaign would not rest until Malawi is redeemed.
“We will not sleep until it is done,” he vowed. “Some people set Malawi ablaze, but it’s God, through me, who will end that fire.”
Swira went on to predict victory on September 16th with a calm confidence that suggested divine pre-approval.
He also urged for peaceful campaigning and voting, a rare bipartisan sentiment in an otherwise divine-right-saturated nomination season.
With Swira now the fourth “God-sent” candidate, questions have emerged about the celestial vetting process. Is there a heavenly primary happening above? Does God take sides or just enjoy variety?
One thing’s for sure: Malawians now face not only a crowded ballot, but also a theological conundrum, just how many prophets can fit on one presidential ticket?
As the campaign trail heats up, all eyes and prayers are on who will receive the ultimate endorsement at the polls.
