Zikhale faces stiff challenge in Nkhata-Bay South as Edina Manda gains momentum
Former Nkhata Bay South legislator Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma is facing mounting pressure as support continues to grow for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) aspirant Edina Manda ahead of the 2025 parliamentary elections.
Once considered a political heavyweight in the constituency, Zikhale is now contending with a strong wave of support for Manda, a newcomer whose grassroots approach and message of change are resonating widely among the electorate.
Findings by Malawi24 in the constituency reveal that many residents are calling for a new chapter in the area’s political leadership. Community voices echo sentiments of fatigue with long-standing figures and a desire to inject “fresh blood” into Parliament.
“People are tired of empty promises. We want someone who will walk with us, listen to our problems, and deliver. I believe I am that person,” said Edina Manda in an exclusive interview. “Nkhata Bay South deserves a leader who is connected to the everyday challenges of the people and ready to take action.”
Manda, who has previously worked with youth and women’s empowerment groups in the district, is leveraging her community development experience as a campaign pillar. Her message, focused on transparency, youth inclusion, and sustainable development, appears to be gaining traction, particularly among first-time voters and marginalised groups.
Some constituents told Malawi24 that while they acknowledge Zikhale’s experience, they feel he has had his chance and failed to bring meaningful change.
“We have seen what he can do. Now we want to give someone else a chance someone who understands the current realities,” said John Banda, a resident of Chituka.
But Zikhale says he will reclaim his seat, claiming that he has initiated several development projects throughout the constituency.
As campaign activities gain momentum ahead of the elections, Nkhata-Bay South is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested constituencies in the Northern Region.
With Manda’s bold emergence and a constituency hungry for transformation, all eyes are now on how the race will unfold in the coming months.
