UTM, DPP Back on Alliance Table at the Eleventh Hour

Kabambe - Mutharika

Drama and confusion continue to rock the DPP–UTM electoral alliance talks! The alliance that had previously fallen apart was reportedly salvaged at the eleventh hour, prompting UTM to cancel its scheduled press conference at the last minute last evening.

However, it remains unclear who will lead the pact. Talks had collapsed after UTM reportedly demanded that Dalitso Kambabe who had unceremoniously dumped the DPP to join the breakaway faction should lead the alliance. The DPP dismissed the demand as “the joke of the century.”

Just as UTM was about to officially announce the collapse of the alliance, the press briefing was abruptly canceled when the DPP politburo called its breakaway faction back to the negotiating table.

Meanwhile, Peter Mutharika is expected to submit his nomination papers today, during which the DPP will unveil its presidential candidate and running mate. Yesterday, the party also revealed it has entered into an electoral alliance with AFORD. Its leader, Enock Chihana, will reportedly be appointed Second Vice President should the DPP and her alliance partners win the presidential race this September.
