Malawi, China deepen investment ties in high-level talks

Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC)

The Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) engaged in a high-level strategic meeting with Lu Xu, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malawi, along with a delegation from the Chinese Embassy.

Discussions centred on key areas of economic cooperation, including investment financing, infrastructure and energy development, agricultural value chains, and opportunities in Malawi’s mining sector.

The meeting also addressed the need to streamline bureaucratic processes, improve investor aftercare, and strengthen institutional communication.

A significant highlight was the introduction of the MITC Smart Connect Portal, a digital tool designed to enhance investor services and transparency.

MITC Director General, Kruger Phiri, stressed the importance of shifting Malawi’s development model from aid dependency to sustainable, investment-led growth.

He reaffirmed MITC’s mandate as the single-entry point for all investments in the country and outlined ongoing efforts to reform the business environment through policy innovation and enhanced investor support.

The dialogue reaffirmed the strong and growing partnership between Malawi and China, with both sides committing to closer collaboration and practical steps to unlock new opportunities.

MITC expressed optimism for continued engagement with the Chinese Embassy as the two nations work together to build a more competitive and investment-ready Malawi.
