President Lazarus Chakwera has delegated Vice President Michael Bizwick Usi to represent Malawi at the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP15).

The high-level conference is scheduled to take place on July 24 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this year’s conference will be held under the theme “Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future.”

The meeting aims to strengthen international commitments toward the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands, which are vital ecosystems for biodiversity, water purification, and climate resilience.

Vice President Usi is expected to depart Kamuzu International Airport on Tuesday, July 22, at 10:30 AM.

He will return on Friday, July 25, at 3:00 PM through the same airport, following Malawi’s participation in the international gathering.

COP15 brings together global leaders, environmental experts, and policymakers to review the progress of countries that are parties to the Ramsar Convention.

The convention, which Malawi ratified in 1994, focuses on the protection of wetlands of international importance, including areas that play a crucial role in sustaining wildlife and supporting local communities.

Malawi’s participation in the Ramsar COP15 signals the government’s ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

With climate change posing growing threats to natural ecosystems, Malawi’s active engagement in such international platforms is key to securing technical, financial, and policy support for wetland preservation.

The outcomes of this conference could influence the country’s future environmental policies and strengthen regional collaboration in protecting shared water resources.
