Enock Chihana urges opposition unity to challenge MCP in September Elections

Alliance for Democracy (Aford) President Enock Chihana has called on opposition leaders to put aside their pride and unite against the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the upcoming September 16 General Elections.

Chihana expressed concern over what he described as a bloated number of presidential candidates, warning that the division among opposition parties could weaken their chances of unseating the MCP.

He argued that what Malawi needs at this critical juncture is a strong, united opposition front that can present a single formidable candidate to challenge the ruling party.

Speaking at rallies in Zomba, Chihana stressed that the continued fragmentation of the opposition would only serve to give the MCP an easy victory.

He urged opposition leaders to rise above personal ambitions and political pride, calling for constructive dialogue and strategic alliances aimed at safeguarding the interests of the Malawian people.

Chihana also utilised the rally to emphasise the importance of peaceful campaigns, reminding both politicians and their supporters that democracy thrives in an environment of tolerance and respect.

The Aford leader’s call comes at a time when the political atmosphere is intensifying, with various parties unveiling their manifestos and strategies ahead of the September polls.

Political analysts have echoed Chihana’s sentiments, noting that opposition unity could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the election.
