The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has renewed its call to Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to take a leading role in fostering peace and non-violence during the 2025 election period.
MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, appealed to Mangochi during an engagement meeting with CSOs from the Eastern Region. The meeting was held at Fort John Ston Hotel and attracted representatives from various organisations working on civic education and community mobilisation.
Justice Mtalimanja stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between MEC and CSOs, noting that these organisations have a critical role in shaping public attitudes towards peaceful political participation.
She specifically urged CSOs to work hand in hand with MEC’s Constituency Civic and Voter Education Assistants (CCVEAs), explaining that this partnership would enhance the reach and effectiveness of voter awareness campaigns.
“Accurate and timely information about the General Election is essential to reduce misinformation and prevent potential conflicts. We believe CSOs can amplify our message of peace and civic responsibility at the grassroots level,” said Mtalimanja.
The Mangochi meeting marked the third in a series of regional engagements between MEC and CSOs, which have also been conducted in the Northern and Central regions. These meetings are designed to strengthen collaboration and ensure coordinated voter education efforts ahead of the September 2025 elections.
MEC announced that the final engagement meeting will take place in Blantyre, where CSOs from the Southern Region will be brought together to discuss similar initiatives.
