The National Development Party (NDP) has insisted that no single party will be able to secure the required 50+1 per cent of votes on its own in the upcoming elections scheduled for September 16 in the country.
The NDP, whose leader is Frank Mwenifumbo, made this statement through a press release and called on opposition parties to unite and form an alliance to achieve the necessary 50+1 majority required in the election.
The statement indicated that currently, the NDP is in discussions with two opposition parties about allying, although these discussions have not yet concluded.
It also mentioned that other parties have approached them for a possible alliance and emphasised that the door is open to all opposition parties, provided they align with the NDP’s vision of transforming the lives of Malawians.
The statement further noted that if no alliance partners are found, the NDP is prepared to contest the election alone, having already collected its nomination form. The party has urged all its supporters to remain behind it.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is expected to hold the tripartite elections on September 16 this year, where citizens will vote for the country’s president, members of parliament, and local councillors.
