UN envoy urges cross-party alliances to boost women’s political participation in Malawi
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Malawi, Rebecca Adda Dontoh, has encouraged aspiring female candidates in the upcoming September 16, 2025 elections to form cross-party alliances as a strategic approach to increase their chances of winning.
Speaking during a cross-party women’s forum currently underway in Lilongwe, Dontoh noted that women across political parties often face similar obstacles in their quest for leadership positions, making solidarity across party lines both practical and powerful.
She explained that such alliances would create a formidable collective force, allowing women to overcome shared barriers and compete more effectively in the male-dominated political landscape.
Dontoh also emphasized that political inclusion cannot be achieved without intentional efforts to support and protect female aspirants throughout the electoral process.
She stressed the need for increased investment in safeguarding the rights and security of women running for public office, noting that such measures are crucial if Malawi is to make meaningful progress in closing existing gender gaps in politics.
The UN official’s remarks come at a critical time as political parties prepare for the 2025 general elections, where the issue of women’s representation remains a concern among governance and gender equality advocates.
By highlighting the importance of alliances and protection, Dontoh has added her voice to the growing call for inclusive and gender-sensitive electoral practices in Malawi.
