Lilongwe Police have arrested Egnat Katengeza, 51, in connection with the murder of her biological sister, Agnes Katengeza, 44, whose body was discovered in her official vehicle on September 24, 2023.
According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the latest arrest marks a major development in the ongoing investigation.
Egnat is the second suspect taken into custody, following the earlier arrest of their half-brother, Amos Katengeza, 27, on December 14, 2023.
Amos, during police questioning, named Egnat as a key accomplice. Though she was initially questioned and released after providing a caution statement, further evidence has led to her formal arrest. She has since been charged with murder.
Investigators believe financial motives may have been behind the killing. Notably, Egnat was the one who initially reported Agnes missing—just hours before her body was found inside her abandoned Kia Sportage behind Gateway Mall in Lilongwe.
Untill her death, Agnes was working as Network and Systems Administrator at the Reserve Bank of Malawi whereas Egnet, who lives in Area 25 Sector 5 works as a Monitoring and Evaluation Manager at MACRO in Area 9, is now in police custody.
Chigalu confirmed that investigations are still underway, and additional arrests could follow as authorities continue to pursue leads.
