Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has expressed his gratitude to the Catholic Women’s Association (CWA) for their initiative and vision to purchase a bus to serve their organisation.
Bishop Chaima made these remarks at Zomba Cathedral during the Chilundu Fundraising event organised by the CWA, aimed at raising close to 60 million Kwacha for the purchase of a bus.
The event was held under the theme: “Women, Let’s Buy a Bus.”
He thanked the CWA for putting their Christian faith first and encouraged them to continue working together in unity as women of the Catholic Church.
Bishop Chaima acknowledged that everyone is aware of the current economic hardships in the country, yet the women decided to take it upon themselves to raise money for the bus. He said this demonstrates the unity and togetherness that exists within their organisation.
“Our culture should help us stay connected with God, and let us take advantage of the opportunities we have to strengthen our families and communities,” he explained.
Guest of honour at the event, Daisy Kambalame, also praised the women of the Zomba Diocese CWA for their visionary plan to purchase a bus for their association.
Kambalame, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Confederation of Chambers and Industry, advised the women that once the bus is acquired, it should not only serve their organisation but also help the church and generate income for the sustainability of their association.
However, her main appeal was for unity among the women.
Also speaking at the event, Atupele Muluzi highlighted that since women make up the majority in the church, the smooth running of the church often depends on them.
Muluzi encouraged the women to always put God first and have a clear vision for the betterment of the church.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the CWA in the Catholic Diocese of Zomba, Christina Lakiyoni, said the fundraising initiative aimed to purchase a bus that would serve their organisation.
Lakiyoni urged all Catholic Women Association members to work together in harmony and avoid any form of division to achieve their goal of buying the bus.
At least 5,000 women participated in the Chilundu Fundraising event. They came from all 20 parishes within the Zomba Diocese, and some even came from the Archdiocese of Blantyre.
