Sylvester Namiwa, one of the leaders of Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE) says he will not be silenced by the assault he recently suffered, vowing to continue leading peaceful demonstrations in Malawi.
Namiwa was among the demonstrators assaulted on June 26 in Lilongwe while leading a protest demanding the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Annabell Mtalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi. Protesters accused the pair of lacking transparency in managing the electoral process.
The assault, which happened in full view of the police and Malawi Defence Force (MDF), left many shocked. But Namiwa says the intimidation has only strengthened his resolve.
“Aluta continua! It is far from over,” he said in an interview. “We will not entertain any attempts to stifle the people’s will. These elections are for Malawians, not Mtalimanja and Mpesi. I will continue defending the integrity of the electoral process through open, transparent and accountable means.”
Two weeks after the incident, no arrests have been made, despite the thugs damaging property and wielding pangas during the attack.
As the official campaign period kicks off on July 14, several groups have raised concerns over the lack of police action. Political commentator Wonderful Mkhutche said the silence from law enforcers could embolden further violence.
“By now we should have arrests, at least,” said Mkhutche. “The message is clear: The police are now acting on partisan interests, and this is worrying since the police are supposed to protect everyone, irrespective of political affiliation.”
