The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the launch of a legally binding electoral Code of Conduct ahead of the country’s General Elections slated for September 16, 2025.
This marks the first time the commission will enforce regulations with the power to sanction violence and misconduct during the campaign period.
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the official campaign window begins on Monday, July 14, and will run for 60 days, ending just eight hours before polling begins.
He added that the Commission now has the authority to take disciplinary action against any individual or party found in breach, including issuing penalties or disqualifying candidates involved in serious violations.
“The new Code of Conduct has been gazetted and is now part of Malawi’s electoral regulations. It is no longer voluntary—every political party and candidate is required to sign and adhere to it,” Mwafulirwa emphasized.
“Violence is explicitly addressed in the new Code. Any electoral stakeholder engaging in acts that compromise a free and fair campaign can face criminal charges and electoral sanctions,” he said.
To promote transparency and accountability, MEC will convene a high-level launch event on July 14, bringing together candidates, political parties, media, and key stakeholders. During the event, the Commission will explain the Code’s provisions and outline the remaining steps leading up to election day.
Additionally, Mwafulirwa confirmed the formation of a national electoral task force comprising all major security agencies. The task force will work closely with MEC to ensure a safe and peaceful campaign environment.
“This is a crucial step in protecting the integrity of our elections,” Mwafulirwa said. “We want to send a clear message—violence and misconduct will not be tolerated.”
