Malawi’s brainpower on display: 13 students snatch top global Indonesian scholarships 

In a major academic and diplomatic coup for the nation, thirteen Malawian students have beaten global competition to secure prestigious, fully-funded scholarships from the Indonesian government.

The group’s success is a significant point of national pride, as Malawi snapped up over 7% of the total 171 scholarships awarded worldwide for the 2025 academic year. This astonishing figure places Malawi in the top tier of recipients and highlights the high calibre of its students on the world stage.

The Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB) scholarship is considered a golden ticket for aspiring academics, covering all university fees, living costs, and travel to Indonesia. 

Before starting their degree courses in vital fields like agriculture and public health, the scholars will also spend a year fully immersed in the Indonesian language and culture.

Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia to Malawi, Tariq Kidy, lauded the achievement as a reflection of a powerful bond between the two countries.

“Indonesia’s vision for global development is anchored in solidarity, education, and empowerment—values that resonate strongly across Africa,” he stated. “For Malawi to secure such a significant number of the global awards is a source of immense pride. These 13 scholars represent not just the future of Malawi but the enduring friendship between our two nations.”

One of the trailblazers, Afera Hassan, who will be pursuing a Master’s in Communication Science, spoke about the honour.

“I am deeply grateful to the Indonesian Government for this prestigious KNB Scholarship,” she said. “To be selected for such a competitive and life-changing opportunity is a profound honour.”

This scholarship windfall is the latest sign of deepening ties between Malawi and Indonesia, a partnership that also includes cooperation in trade and health.

These thirteen scholars are now set to become Malawi’s ambassadors in Southeast Asia, destined to return with skills and knowledge vital for the nation’s future.
