Senior UTM figure, Mathews Mtumbuka has dismissed rumours of his defection from the party, reaffirming his commitment and condemning what he calls a deliberate campaign of misinformation.

Speaking to the local media, Mtumbuka who is also an adviser to economist and UTM presidential candidate Dalitso Kabambe described the rumours as baseless and intended to cause confusion within political circles.

“I am a bona fide member of UTM. I cannot and will not dump the party. UTM is in my DNA,” he declared.

He went on to slam those behind the rumours, warning that the spread of falsehoods for political gain is not only irresponsible but also dangerous. “These lies are dangerous and misleading. I urge those responsible to stop immediately,” Mtumbuka said.

Citing Malawi’s Cybersecurity and Cyber Crimes Act, he reminded the public that circulating fake news is a criminal offense punishable by law. He urged citizens to be vigilant against politically motivated propaganda, especially as the country edges closer to a tense election season.

Although UTM is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, sources within the party say Mtumbuka remains fully involved in party activities, including strategy meetings and policy consultations.
