Malawi U-20 star Mwisho Mhango turned heads with a match-winning brace against Zimbabwe at the COSAFA U-20 Championship, but rumours of a move to German side Hannover 96 have stirred more noise off the pitch than on it.
After the 2–1 win, Mhango hinted at a return to Germany, sparking speculation about an imminent Bundesliga 2 transfer. However, his current club, Ascent Academy, has flatly denied any such deal.
“As far as we know, there’s no agreement,” said Ascent head coach and Director Thom Mkolongo. “Yes, Mwisho had trials in Europe, but the reports of a move are false.”
Mkolongo pointed out that Mhango, only 17, is barred by FIFA from signing a professional deal abroad as a non-EU minor. “These stories mislead people. The rules are clear,” he said.
The academy issued a formal statement urging media outlets to verify information before publishing and to allow Mhango to focus on national duties.
Adding to the confusion, Mhango said post-match that he was “heading back to Germany,” though no details have been confirmed by the club.
Despite the drama, Mhango’s on-field rise continues. National coach Milias Pofera Jegwe praised his growth: “He’s matured and performing brilliantly.” All eyes remain on the young striker as Malawi fights on in the tournament.
