Malawi U-20 head coach Milias Pofera Jegwe has lauded Mwisho Mhango’s exceptional display in their 2–1 victory over Zimbabwe at the COSAFA U-20 Championship, attributing the forward’s resurgence to mentorship and newfound maturity.
Mhango scored both goals for Malawi, finding the net in the 25th and 72nd minutes to secure a vital group stage win. Zimbabwe’s sole reply came through Tadiwa Chakuchichi in the 57th minute, but it wasn’t enough to deny the Young Flames all three points.
Jegwe revealed that Mhango had previously struggled with attitude issues but responded positively to guidance from the coaching staff. “Mwisho is a brilliant boy,” said Jegwe. “We faced some challenges with him, but after counseling and reminding him of his role in the team, he bounced back. I’m proud of how he conducted himself today.”
The Ascent Academy prospect capped off his performance by earning the Man of the Match award, impressing with sharp finishing and tactical awareness. Jegwe highlighted Mhango’s growth, crediting both mental discipline and recent international exposure.
“He recently trained in Germany, and we believe he’s on track for a professional move. He’s shown real progress — this could be a big step forward in his career,” the coach said, referring to Mhango’s stint with German club Hannover 96.
Despite Mhango’s heroics, Jegwe praised the entire squad for executing a disciplined game plan. Aware of Zimbabwe’s attacking threat, Malawi relied on defensive organization and swift counter-attacks — tactics that paid off handsomely. “We studied them well and knew how to contain their attack. It was a tough game, but the boys stuck to the plan,” he added.
After the match, Mhango expressed gratitude for the coaching staff’s belief in him and shared excitement about his upcoming move. “I’m happy I helped the team win. After this tournament, I’ll be heading to Germany to join Hannover 96 in Bundesliga 2. It means a lot to be the first Malawian to play in the Bundesliga,” he said.
