Sister Teresa Mulenga of the Teresian Congregation has called on Christians at Likuni Parish of Lilongwe Archdiocese to plant fruit trees to promote nutrition and income generation.

The appeal was made during a tree-planting exercise where 120 fruit trees, including avocado, orange, tangerine, and peach trees, were planted in collaboration with church elders and chiefs.

Sister Mulenga emphasised the importance of fruit trees in human lives, highlighting their role in promoting nutrition and serving as a source of income.

She encouraged chiefs to take a leading role in tree planting, without relying on external prompts.

The sister also urged the community to care for the trees by watering and protecting them from wildfires.

“We’re encouraging people to take the lead in planting fruit trees because they promote nutrition and protect houses from strong winds,” she said.

Senior Group Village Headman (GVH) Mtanga commended Sister Mulenga and Likuni Parish for promoting fruit tree planting, joining the initiative to restore natural resources in the area.

He expressed confidence that the community would care for the trees, recognising their benefits.

Father Precious Chitha of Likuni Parish appreciated the tree-planting exercise, noting that trees not only protect houses from strong winds but also beautify the area, provide fresh air, and attract rain.

He encouraged Christians to emulate Sister Mulenga’s gesture, emphasising that Christianity and humanity go hand-in-hand with environmental conservation.
